FIRE AND LIFE SAFETY DIVISION

Whereas the fire department is reactive to the emergencies of the community, the Fire and Life Safety Education (FLSE) Division is a proactive component of the department. It is our belief that the best way to handle an emergency is to prevent it from ever happening if at all if possible. However, not all emergencies can be prevented, so the next step is to know what to do in case of an emergency.

The majority of our calls are not fire calls, but emergencies of various natures. With this in mind, the department has developed the already existing fire prevention program into a fire and life safety program that is better suited to meet the needs of the community. This includes the education of unintentional injury prevention such as motor vehicle and pedestrian safety, burn prevention, water safety and poison prevention to name a few. We also are equipped to now offer natural disaster preparedness education for situations such as severe winter storms, flooding, tornadoes, and hurricanes. Recently, we have added a new program specifically targeting the elderly and their caregivers to help prevent falls and fires.

Our new FLSE division encompasses all citizens of Liberty and the Northeast Fire District, from preschool children to our senior adults, as FLSE is a life long learning process.

Robin Breedlove, Fire and Life Safety Educator II, invites the public to take advantage of the many resources offered by the department free of charge. Many of these resources are possible due to a recently acquired Fire Prevention Grant to educate the citizens of our community.

Please call the department at 622-9050 to schedule a station tour, a FLSE class at the station, or to have someone bring a FLSE message to your group.
